The Holy Spirit

His Person

The Holy Spirit has a distinct character. He is not just a vague impersonal force. The Bible tells us that the Spirit speaks , moves, gives , teaches , and performs many more actions which prove Him to be personal.

His Power

"Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit," saith the Lord of Hosts. (Zechariah 4.6) The Holy Spirit is the means by which God's power is seen at work. God doesn't need mighty armies or great machines to accomplish His purpose. Instead God works through His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a member of the Godhead, equal with the Father and the Son. The Spirit played an active part in the creation (Gen 1.2) , death and resurrection of Christ (Hebrews 9.14, Romans 1.4) , in the formation of the church (1 Corinthians 12.13) , as indeed in all works undertaken by God!

His Purpose

The Holy Spirit is at work in the world, striving with men (Genesis 6.3) and convicting them of their sins (John 16.8-11) , in order to bring them in repentance to God.

The Holy Spirit is at work in the church, teaching believers (John 16.13) and giving people special abilities to serve God (1 Corinthians 12) .

The Holy Spirit is at work in the lives of individual Christians. He resides within each genuine believer (John 14.17) . He leads them in the right way (Romans 8.14) . He is a guarantee of all God's future blessings at the end of our time on earth (Ephesians 1.13-14) .
